Heart guide for Yuan

He doesn't think he's worthy of kindness, so don't be too nice or he’ll try to protect you from himself.
He doesn't like cruel people, so don't be too mean.
If you reveal at any point an inclination to look down on the poor, half-breeds of any race, or the disadvantaged in general, he's going to distance himself and he may never tell you why.
He’s pretty tolerant otherwise, so dating him is mostly about talking to him enough to build a rapport, and successfully navigating his heart events - which are unfortunately convoluted and lacking in clues to the correct answers.
Any failure during a heart event will set you back at least two heart levels. Failing the third will set you back to the first. However, you get as many tries as you need to get it right, as long as you have the patience to keep trying.

Heart event 1: Philosophical discussions in the wee hours of the morning.
Success: Be willing to have the discussion

Heart event 2: Stage 1: Yuan tries to push you around/bully you into doing something.
Fail 1: Let him - he’ll think you’re too easy to push around, and therefore not relationship material
Success 1: Talk back
Stage 2: Yuan gets mad at you for talking back at him rather than giving in
Fail 2: Give in to his temper - again, if he can push you around, he can’t date you
Success 2: Continue to hold your ground - he’ll back down and respect you for it
Heart event 3: Yuan actively tries to push you away and convince you that he's a terrible person.
Fail 1: Become convinced that he’s as terrible as he thinks he is.
Fail 2: Walk away or otherwise refuse to engage.
Success: Insist on staying close to him and try in return to convince him that he isn’t beyond saving.
Heart event 4: Yuan finally opens up about his history more generally.
Fail: Dismiss or reject him - but if you’ve gotten this far, why would you?
Success: Just listen. It doesn’t really matter what you think or say, as long as you hear him out and don’t push him away.
